Tips to exfoliate the face

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells to release pores of oil and dirt. To exfoliate, creams with a sandy texture are usually used, which when in contact and rub with the skin eliminate the old cells and expose the younger cells.

This results in glowing, healthier, less aged skin, with fewer blackheads, softer and with fewer pimples.

If you want to have healthy skin it is extremely important to exfoliate the skin at least twice a week. However, if your skin is particularly delicate, it’s best to exfoliate once a week. Overexfoliating the skin can leave it red and dehydrated.

Although modern life consumes our time and energy, we must always give ourselves time. It is ideal that at least twice a week you clear an hour of your schedule to give yourself something you deserve: a moment of relaxation.

You can take a long bath with hot water, light some aromatic candles, have a glass of wine and dedicate your whole mind to the care of your body.

One of the goals of exfoliation is to cleanse the skin deeply. So try to cleanse your face before you start exfoliating. Remove your makeup and cleanse your face (or body) with your favorite soap. Your face should be clean and fresh before you start exfoliating.

It is not advisable to rub the skin very hard with exfoliating creams since this is to irritate and dry out the skin. This is why the ideal is that your skin is as soft, fresh and clean as possible.

After cleansing your skin you can apply a little steam to detach the dead cells and open the pores, which will make exfoliation friendlier and also more effective.

There are two methods of exfoliation: chemical and physical.

Chemical peel consists of a chemical combination that detaches dead skin cells and also nourishes it with different vitamins and minerals.

For example, if your skin is oily, it is best to choose a product with benzoyl peroxide or salicic acid. This will prevent your skin from secreting more fat than necessary.

On the other hand, if your skin is dry we recommend that you avoid glycolic scrubs, since this is extremely penetrating the skin, and can dry it out more than expected.

Physical exfoliation involves the use of manual or electronic brushes to remove dead skin. It is one of the easiest and most economical forms of exfoliation.

You can also easily exfoliate with homemade ingredients or through dermatological treatments such as microdermabra treatment or a chemical “Peel”.

Exfoliating the skin on your face or body at home is one of the simplest things out there. There are several base ingredients that you can mix as you please.

To create the sandy texture you can use ground coffee, sugar, oatmeal, corn flour or sand. If you have dry skin you can mix it with olive oil, avocado, aloe vera. On the other hand, if you have oily skin you can mix it with yogurt, cucumber puree or tomato.

You can use these mixtures to exfoliate your face and body. You can store it in the fridge or in a cool place to keep it for up to 4 weeks.

You can also impersonate olive oil with any other oil you like, such as:

  • Coconut oil
  • Olive oil
  • Rosehip
  • Cacomila oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Blackcurrant oil

You can also mix some baking soda with water and apply it to your face for several minutes. Stir with a towel soaked in warm oil. Two tablespoons of baking soda for a cup of warm water will be more than enough.

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, but also removes the natural fat your skin has created to protect itself. This is why it is so important to moisturize the skin well with your favorite cream once you have finished exfoliating your skin. In the same way, if you plan to leave the house after exfoliating, apply moisturizer with sunscreen. Your skin will be more sensitive than usual to sun damage.
